The Do’s and Don’t’s To Tall Grass Sessions

Chelsea and I are known for our love of tall grass. Since we live in Tennessee, there is plenty to go around. Our state is filled with tall trees and rolling hills. We love photographing couples in wide, open fields.

With all the sessions that we have done, we’ve picked up a few tips and tricks to making the most out of of each shoot that involves tall grass.

01. Do Wear Hunter Boots.

As you probably know, we wear hunter boots to every session. We love them. Not only are they cute, but since we shoot outdoors 99% of the time, they help us stay clean and avoid multiple bug bites when being outdoors. Plus, they are super durable. We could seriously go on and on about how much we love hunter boots.

02. Do Bring Bug Spray.

This is an essential when shooting anything outside, especially when in Tennessee. I use organic bug spray from Whole Foods because basically everything I use is organic!

03. Do Use The Grass For Layering.

We love layering our images in the foreground, whether grass, branches, flowers, buildings, our columns. It adds a little something to an image.

04. Don’t Be Afraid To Get Dirty.

Chelsea and I are always willing to hike through the tall grass to get a shot.

05. Don’t Make Your Clients Walk To Far In.

Always ask at the start of a session if your client is willing to get out in a field. Some aren’t okay with, which is totally fine. There are ways to make it look like your client is in the middle of a tall field even when they aren’t. Find a patch of mowed grass that is still surrounded by tall grass on both sides, so you can still get the same effect of being out in a field.
