Why Backing Up Your Work Should Be A Priority

We’ve heard horror stories from so many photographers about losing their clients images on a wedding day. From having memory cards fail, to formatting the wrong memory card, to cameras getting stolen with images still not backed up to an external hard-drive. I feel sick every time I hear one of those stories. I can’t imagine what it must be like to go through that and I hope we never do.

Being a wedding photographer means you have to wear many hats. It can be stressful having to be so many things at once. But no matter what, we need to make sure we are being responsible and putting our clients first. You have to do your due diligence to protect your client’s images. You can’t recreate a wedding day. There is no reshooting if you lose the images.

Thankfully, we have not had that happen to us. Chelsea and I take every precaution to make sure our client’s images are protected. We established a system early on so we knew exactly what to do to keep our images safe.

01. We Back Up Our Images On Two Different Memory Cards

Our cameras have a dual memory card slot. This allows images to be put on two cards (a SD and CF card), so if we have a card failure during the wedding day, then we would still have at least one card with the images still on it.

02. We Back Up Our Images On An External Hard-drive.

Once we get home from shooting a wedding, we immediately back up the images from the memory card to not only one but two separate external hard-drives.

03. Never Let Memory Cards Out Of Your Sight.

We put all of our memory cards in this memory card holder. This keeps them from getting scratched our lost while we are shooting a wedding. Once a memory card is full, we turn it backwards in the case to avoid formatting the wrong card. After the wedding, if we have to run errands on our way home, we make sure to put the case in our purse.  Until the cards are backed up, we have them on us at all times.

We NEVER want to have to look at one of our sweet brides and tell them we lost their images. I would be heart broken. Our clients put so much trust in us, and we don’t want to let them down. This is the most important lesson to learn when it comes to your client experience. Take every precaution you can to avoid these detrimental mistakes.
