3 Ways To Find Your Ideal Mentor

Education

January 2, 2019

If you’ve followed along with us in the past, then you know that we are huge believers in investing in your photography education. When you first start learning about photography, it is easy to become torn between investing in nicer, more professional equipment or investing in courses for shooting/editing and posing. The best decision we ever made for our business was investing in education first. Not only did we do a lot of research on our own and utilized the free content that was already out there, but we also purchased courses from our mentor photographers.

It can be hard to choose which course to purchase. Let’s be honest, there are so many photographer’s out there already who are selling amazing content, and it can be hard to narrow down who to invest in. So, we are sharing some of our best advice on how to choose your photography mentor.

01. You appreciate their work.

We knew early on that we loved natural light photography. We always found ourselves gravitating towards light and airy photos, especially with the subjects posed in tall grass. So, we chose to learn from photographers whose work we loved. So, when choosing your mentor, first make sure they shoot and edit photos in the same style that you wish to shoot and edit photos in.

02. You respect the way they run their business and treat their clients.

Before purchasing education courses from our mentor photographers, we followed them for a long time before we made the investment. We knew who they were because we followed them on Instagram. We read all of their posts and watched all of their videos on Instagram. We shared similar beliefs as these photographers. We even liked the same brands of clothes and home decor. The people we chose to learn from were people that we could see ourselves being friends with. We took the time to get to know them, which made us feel more comfortable when we finally went to invest in their education courses.

03.  They have the heart of a teacher.

Our mentor photographers truly love teaching photography, and they genuinely care for the success of our business. They embody the phrase, “Community over Competition”. They are patient and kind. They answer all of our questions, and they are wise in the sense that they know we are always learning, and there will never be a point where we know everything about photography. We are always growing.

So, there you have it! These are some of the things you should look for when selecting a mentor. Choosing to invest in education early on is something we will always recommend.
